Statesmen hockey falls to Potsdam in season opener

October 30, 2002

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College hockey team opened the 2002-03 season with a 4-0 loss to the Potsdam Bears in a non-conference game. The Statesmen were unable to get past a tough Potsdam goalie, despite firing 31 shots on goal.

The Bears got on board in the ninth minute of the first period when winger Eric Peter-Kaiser (Nanimo Clippers/West Vancouver, British Columbia) received a pass from Jason Brothers and slipped it past sophomore goalie Adam Lavelle (Bridgton Academy/Chelmsford, Mass.). Just over three minutes later on its first power play of the game, Potsdam gained a 2-0 advantage on a Mike Snow ( Charlottetown Abbies/Glace Bay, Nova Scotia) shot from the right wing. The Bears received power-play goals from Joel Jennings (Huntsville Wildcats/Bracebridge, Ontario) and Anthony Greer (Bancroft Hawks/Florenceville, New Brunswick) in the second period to put the game out of Hobart’s reach.

Lavelle went the distance for the Statesmen, making 25 saves, while Potsdam goalie Ryan Venturelli (Huntsville Wildcats/Bracebridge, Ontario) grabbed 31 on the evening.

The Statesmen travel to the Buffalo State Invitational next, facing off against Fredonia at 4 p.m., on Nov. 1, and Buffalo State on Nov. 2, at 7:30 p.m.
