Soaring Eagles top Statesmen in shootout

November 10, 2001

GENEVA, N.Y.–The Elmira College hockey team survived a scare, spoiling Hobart College's home opener with an 8-5 win. The Statesmen rallied for a 5-4 third period lead before the Soaring Eagles came from behind to ice the victory.

Elmira jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on goals from senior forward Steve Kaye (North York/Scarborough, Ontario) and first-year defenseman Chris Mann (Cornwall/Cornwall, Ontario) 26 seconds apart. The Statesmen netted the next two on power-play goals from first-year forward Kevin Coakley (Tilton/Duxbury, Mass.) and sophomore forward Chris Doolan (Hill School/Lyndell, Pa.) with 14:38 gone in the first period. The two teams traded the next two goals, both on the power play, and were tied at three in the first intermission.

The Eagles jumped back out in front with a goal from senior forward Eddie Cassie (Bridgewater/Billerica, Mass.) four minutes into the second period. Hobart tied the game with a power-play goal from Trevor Gowan (Shenendehowa/Ballston Lake, N.Y.) with just over a minute to go in the period after killing a five-minute Elmira power play.

Less than a minute into the final period, first-year center Craig Levey (Mississauga Chargers/Mississauga Ontario) gave the Statesmen a 5-4 lead with their fourth power-play goal of the game. The Eagles tied the game two minutes later and added three more goals, including an empty netter en route to the 8-5 win.

In goal, senior Nick Edling (Shattuck St. Mary's/Park City, Utah) made 25 saves for Elmira (3-1-0, 2-0-0). First-year goalie Adam Lavelle (Bridgeton Academy/Chelmsford, Mass.) stopped 43 shots for Hobart (3-3-0, 1-1-0). The two teams combined for seven power-play goals.

Coakley finished with two goals and Gowan led all scorers with a goal and two assists for the Statesmen.

Hobart hosts SUNY Fredonia on Nov. 15, at 7:30 p.m. Last season, the Statesmen tied the Blue Devils, 1-1, in Geneva.
