Statesmen down Blue Devils, 4-1

November 15, 2001

GENEVA, N.Y.–The Hobart College hockey team defeated SUNY-Fredonia 4-1 in a foggy Geneva Recreation Complex. The Statesmen got two goals from first-year center Kevin Coakley (Tilton/Duxbury, Mass.) and a goal and an assist from sophomore wing Chris Doolan (Hill School/Lyndell, Pa.).

After an even first period an icing call against the Blue Devils gave Hobart a faceoff in the Fredonia zone with 24 seconds left in the period. First-year center Craig Levey (Mississauga Chargers/Mississauga, Ontario) won the draw and sophomore wing R.C. Schmidt (Army/Buxton, Maine) wristed a shot over Blue Devil junior goalie Will Hamele's (Cleveland Jr. A/Dearborn, Mich.) left shoulder for a 1-0 Statesmen lead.

At the 9:21 mark of the second period, Coakley scored his first of the night to double the lead on assists from first-year forward Jesse Desper (Williston/West Kennebunk, Maine) and Doolan. Fredonia answered four minutes later on a goal by first-year forward Max Catelin (Capital District Jr. A/Grenoble, France) to cut the lead to 2-1. Coakley struck again with 2:02 remaining in the period on assists from first-year defenseman Stephen Mitacek (Canterbury School/Wantagh, N.Y.) and sophomore defenseman Carl Michaelson (NFLD/Hudson, Quebec).

In the third period, the Statesmen added one last goal despite being outshot 16-4 in the final frame. Doolan stuffed the puck between Hamele's left skate and the post for a 4-1 lead. Sophomores Justin Macklin (Phillips Exeter/Acton, Mass.) and Evan Hurley (Rutland/Rutland, Vt.) assisted on the goal.

In goal, first-year Adam Lavelle (Bridgton Academy/Chelmsford, Mass.) was spectacular for Hobart, stopping 45 of 46 shots, including a break away. Hamele made 20 saves for the Blue Devils (3-5-1). Fredonia was 0-5 on the power play, while the Statesmen were 0-2.

Hobart (4-3-0) returns to action on Nov. 18, when Curry College comes to Geneva. Faceoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
