Statesmen crush Curry, 7-3

November 18, 2001

GENEVA, N.Y.–The Hobart College hockey team rallied to defeat Curry College, 7-3 for its second-straight win. The Statesmen got two goals and two assists from sophomore forward R.C. Schmidt (Army/Buxton, Maine) and a goal and two assists from first-year forward Craig Levey (Mississauga Chargers/Mississauga, Ontario) to overwhelm the Colonels in the final 40 minutes.

Curry got on the board first at 14:07 of the first period. Colonel senior defenseman Joe Savioli (Catholic Memorial/Milton, Mass.) fired a high shot through a crowd for a 1-0 lead. Curry outshot Hobart 10-7 in the opening 20 minutes.

Early in the second period, the two teams traded three goals in 32 seconds. Sophomore forward Chris Doolan (Hill School/Lyndell, Pa.) tied the game at the 1:55 mark after a Colonel turnover. Curry senior forward Jason Doyle (Dennis-Yarmouth/Dennisport, Mass.) put the Colonels up 2-1 just 16 seconds later with a wrap-around. At the 2:28 mark, first-year forward Max Levine (Lawrenceville/New York, N.Y.) capitalized on another Curry breakdown to tie the game a 2-2. Levey gave the Statesmen the lead for good, scoring a goal with 13:43 gone in the period to start a 5-0 Hobart run. The Statesmen outshot the Colonels 22-13 in the second period.

Sophomore forward Justin Macklin (Phillips Exeter/Acton, Mass.) made it a 4-2 Hobart lead three minutes into the third period. Four minutes later junior forward John Gluek (Hebron/Barrington, R.I.) extended the lead to three with shot off the right elbow of Curry sophomore goalie Phil Belmont (Marshfield/Marshfield, Mass.). Schmidt netted the next two goals to close the scoring for the Statesmen at 9:26 and 12:42 for a 7-2 advantage. First-year forward Joseph Chaisson (Watertown/Watertown, Mass.) got the Colonels within four with two minutes remaining, but it wasn't enough as Hobart cruised to the 7-3 victory.

In goal, first-year Adam Lavelle (Bridgton Academy/Chelmsford, Mass.) stopped 35 shots for the win. Belmont finished with 36 saves for Curry (4-1-0). Macklin and Gluek each finished with a goal and an assist.

The Statesmen (5-3-0) return to action on Nov. 20, when they travel to Buffalo State for a 7 p.m. contest. Last season, Hobart defeated the Bengals 7-1 on the road and tied them 5-5 in Geneva.
