Statesmen grab 4-4 tie from Geneseo

January 13, 2004

GENEVA, N.Y.—Sophomore Will Brame (West Hartford, Conn.) and junior Craig Levey (Mississauga, Ontario) combined for five points as Hobart skated to a 4-4 tie with a tough Geneseo State squad in hockey action this evening at the Geneva Recreation Complex. Levey continued his scoring streak, tallying at least one point in 11 of his last 12 games.

Looking to come away with a pair of points, sophomore Colby McVey (Chicago, Illinois) gave the Statesmen (5-5-5) a 1-0 lead at the 7:57 mark after putting in a deflection off a shot from sophomore Greg Gallagher (Framingham, Mass.) on the power play. Brame made it 2-0 with 45 seconds left in the first period, knocking home a perfect centering pass from McVey.

Frank Baumgardner (Mt. Morris, N.Y.) cut the lead in half for the Blue Knights (8-4-2) 14:29 into the second stanza, but sophomore Brian Keane (Sherborn, Mass.) answered just over a minute later finding the net off his own rebound. Geneseo came right back two minutes later and made it a one-goal game as first-year Mitch Stephens (Forrest, Manitoba) lit the lamp again for the Knights.

Outshooting Geneseo 8-3 through the first half of the final session, Hobart finally was able to capitalize after the Knights got whistled for a penalty. One minute into the power play Levey unleashed a slap shot from in front of the net, missing just wide, but Brame was in the right position to put in the rebound off the board to give the Statesmen a 4-2 lead. Hobart continued to play tough defense, allowing Geneseo just a pair of shots in the next seven minutes.

Pulling their goalie in favor of an extra attacker with 2:23 left paid off as the Knights scored twice in the final minute to tie the game. Headed into overtime for the second time in as many games, Hobart generated excellent chances but Geneseo goalie Brett Walker (Regina, Saskatchewan) was up to the task as neither team was able to tally the decisive goal.

Junior Adam Lavelle (Chelmsford, Mass.) went the distance and pulled in 32 stops, while Walker made 28 saves for the Knights in 63 minutes of action.
