Statesmen shutout Golden Eagles 5-0

January 24, 2004

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College hockey team scored a pair of goals 49 seconds apart in the beginning of the second period and never looked back, handing visiting Brockport State a 5-0 loss at the Geneva Recreation Complex. Earning their first shutout of the season, the Statesmen have won six consecutive games over the Golden Eagles and 10 of the past 11 meetings.

After a scoreless first period that featured a combined 17 shots and five power-play opportunities, Hobart (7-6-5) wasted little time getting into the scoring column in the second stanza. Just 1:56 into the session, first-year Marc Borden (Glenview, Ill.) scored his third goal of the weekend, knocking home a Jonathan Swift (Andover, Mass.) rebound. Sophomore winger Lee Carrier (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) lit the lamp again just 49 seconds later for an unassisted score, his first of the season.

The Statesmen stretched the lead to three 7:58 into the third period when senior R.C. Schmidt’s (Buxton, Maine) wrist shot found the back of the net. Junior forward Jesse Desper (West Kennebunk, Maine) tallied an unassisted goal less than two minutes later, while sophomore defenseman Greg Gallagher (Framingham, Mass.) closed out the scoring with a one-timer off a pass from first-year David Menter (Lake George, N.Y.) with 8:59 left to play.

The Statesmen controlled the puck, outshooting Brockport (4-15-0) 41-18 for the night, including a 20-6 advantage in the final stanza. Neither team was able to capitalize on any of its power-play chances as Hobart went 0-3 and the Golden Eagles were 0-7.

Sophomore Thomas Kelliher (Rochester, N.Y.) got his second consecutive start and first career shutout with 18 saves, while Junior Andy Reynolds (Vicksburg, Mich.) pulled in 36 stops for Brockport.

Hobart returns to the ice on Jan. 27, hosting Buffalo State at the Geneva Recreation Complex. The puck is scheduled to drop at 7 p.m.
