December 12, 2001 GENEVA, N.Y."I'm having a blast this season," says second year Hobart Hockey Head Coach Mark Taylor, who is less concerned with wins and losses, than his squad's improvement as players and teammates. "Each player has gotten better in his game, but more importantly, each player has grown as a teammate. I like our team chemistry." Taylor points to the team's leaders for this success. "Our leadership has been outstanding on the ice, on the bench, and off the ice. This is a credit to Dan Bush and to other individuals that have emerged this year." Through the first 12 games, Taylor feels his team is on the right track. "I feel good about the first half of the season. Our goal was to unite the team and get better every day. Our best team effort was our last game (Hobart 3, Buffalo State 2 ot, Dec. 7). Our defensive play was our best that game, and that showed a commitment from the players." With a 6-6-0 (1-1-0 ECAC West) record at the break with 15 new players this year, Taylor should feel some what satisfied. Aside from the play of the team, Taylor is also pleased with the support he is receiving from the Hobart community. "This is a very exciting time for Hobart hockey. Team facilities are being built and equipment has been upgraded to top of the line quality. I like the direction the program's culture is heading." He credits past Statesmen with creating the opportunity for the program to grow. "Things don't just change because of a new coach and new players. You have to carry over some of the foundations of previous years," says Taylor. "Hobart coaches and players before us competed with Statesmen Pride and because they loved hockey. All of the tangible things that we are getting are because of their perseverance." With the second half of the season just around the corner, Taylor is looking for more of the same from his team. "Our goal and challenge for the second half will be very similar. We have 13 regular season games left and we play six games with teams that are in national polls. Our chemistry will be tested and will need to be taken to an even higher level. Our team play and individual performances must elevate with everyone else's." Taylor says he has asked for one thing in particular from his players. "We make no prediction to each other, but we make a promise to each other --- to live the ride of the season . . . that is to compete with passion and have fun doing so." Hobart begins an eight-game road trip on Jan. 5, at SUNY-Geneseo at 7 p.m. The Statesmen return home on Feb. 6, when they host ECAC West rival RIT at 7 p.m.
