GENEVA, N.Y.—One current and one former Hobart Statesman will be among the 120 players invited to try out for the 2006 U.S. Men’s Lacrosse Team. Senior defenseman Greg McCarthy (Pinkerton Academy/Derry, N.H.) and attackman Josh Kenney ’96, of Long Beach, will travel to the University of Maryland-Baltimore County June 13-16, in search for one of the 23 spots on the national team roster.

The first Statesman to earn a spot on the Tewaaraton Award watch list, McCarthy is a four-year starter who earned USILA All-American honorable mention and All-Patriot League first-team honors in 2004. He is currently third among defensemen on the team in ground balls with 26, raising his career total to 111. A punishing and physical defender, McCarthy has been tasked with marking the opposition’s top scoring threat since his first collegiate game against Maryland in 2002.

In each of the past two seasons, McCarthy has earned Hobart’s C.R.A.G. Outstanding Defensive Player Award presented at the annual Block H Awards dinner.

“This is a well deserved honor,” Hobart Head Coach and U.S. Team Assistant Coach Matt Kerwick said. “Greg has been an imposing presence and vocal leader for us since he first stepped foot on campus.”

Kenney, 32, is a veteran player in the U.S. Club Lacrosse Association, currently playing for the Long Island Lacrosse Club. Since the start of the 2002 club season, he has recorded 43 goals and 60 assists for 103 points in just 29 games. Kenney led the Northern Division in scoring in 2004, notching 40 points (13-27) in nine games.

As a Statesman, Kenney scored 56 goals and assisted on 30 more for 86 career points. He led Hobart in scoring in 1995, the program’s first season at the Division I level. Kenney was also a member of Hobart’s 1993 Division III National Championship team, scoring five goals and assisting on two more. He was twice the William H. Dobbin ’40 Memorial Award winner as Hobart’s top offensive player.

The U.S. National Team will compete in the 2006 International Lacrosse Federation World Championships in July in London, Ontario.
