Lacrosse to compete in 3rd annual Algonquin Cup
September 30 , 2005
GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College lacrosse team will compete in the third annual Algonquin Cup Lacrosse Invitational on Oct. 9 at Hofstra University. The nine-game tournament field features six teams from five conferences, including Cornell University, Duke University, Hofstra, St. John’s University, and Stony Brook University, as well as the Statesmen.
“We are looking forward to competing against some of the best teams in the country,” Hobart Head Coach Matt Kerwick ’90 said. “The Algonquin Cup allows us to evaluate our new players and gives us a chance to come together as a team.”
Hobart will open up the six-team tournament against the Blue Devils of Duke at James M. Shuart Stadium at 10 a.m.
In 2005, Hobart completed its first season in the ECAC Lacrosse League with an overall record of 7-7 and a 2-4 mark in the conference. The Statesmen return four starters from last season’s squad, including ECAC Rookie of the Year Daryl Veltman (Salisbury School/Georgetown, Ontario) and All-ECAC second-team selection Chris David (Georgetown Prep/Silver Springs, Md.).
A starter in all 14 games, Veltman led Hobart in points (50), on 28 goals and 22 assists, becoming just the second player since the Statesmen moved to Division I to record at least 50 points in a season. David, who started 11 of the 14 games he played in, finished second on the team in goals (24) and tied for third in points (26).
Senior defensemen Matt Murphy (Haverford/Havertown, Pa.) will anchor the Hobart defensive corps. He was fifth on the team with 46 groundballs and added three assists to the offense.
The Algonquin Cup was established in 2003 to showcase the country’s elite teams and conclude the sport’s fall season with great fanfare. The University of Notre Dame captured the inaugural Algonquin Cup title, while the U.S. Military Academy defeated Hofstra to claim the 2004 title.
