GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College lacrosse team moved up three spots to No. 17 in the first weekly USILA Geico/STX Coaches Poll after opening the season with a pair of victories. The Statesmen were tabbed 20th in the preseason rankings. Sitting atop the poll is Johns Hopkins (3-0) with nine votes, while Navy (3-0) is second, garnering one first-place vote.
Hobart improved to 2-0 this past weekend with a 10-7 win over a scrappy Binghamton squad in its 2005 home opener. First-year Daryl Veltman (Salisbury/Georgetown, Ontario) paced the Statesmen attack with five points (3-2), while senior Sean Reed (Waterloo/Waterloo, N.Y.) contributed a pair of goals and an assist in the victory.
Senior goaltender Dan Valente (Mount Hebron/Ellicott City, Md.) made 12 stops to secure the win.
Veltman leads all scorers with six points (4-2), while sophomore Chris David (Georgetown Prep/Silver Springs, Md.) is second in points with five goals, three of which came in the season opening victory over Butler.
In the cage, Valente is sporting a solid 7.00 goals against average and a .689 save percentage.
The Statesmen return to action on March 12, when they visit 19th-ranked Ohio State (1-2) at noon.
