GENEVA, N.Y.—Hobart first-year attackman Daryl Veltman (Sailsbury School/Georgetown, Ontario) has been selected the 2005 ECAC Lacrosse League Rookie of the Year. Announced earlier this week following a vote of the League’s coaches, three other Statesmen brought home All-ECAC honors.

Senior attackman Nate Hill (Hamburg/Hamburg, N.Y.) earned first-team praise, while senior defenseman Greg McCarthy (Pinkerton Academy/Derry, N.H.) and sophomore midfielder Chris David (Georgetown Prep/Silver Springs, Md.) received second-team recognition.

Veltman started all 14 games this season, leading Hobart with 28 goals and 22 assists. He is the first Statesman first-year to lead the team in scoring since 1971 and just the second Hobart player to score 50 points in a season since the program moved to Division I in 1995. Veltman scored a season-high eight points (4-4) at Penn State and collected a season-high six ground balls against Canisius. The three-time ECAC Lacrosse League Rookie of the Week is the only Statesman to record at least one point in every game this season.

In 14 games, including 12 starts, Hill recorded 18 goals and 19 assists for 37 points. He was second on the team in assists and points. Hill scored a season-high six points twice, assisting on six goals at Robert Morris and posting four goals and two assists against Rutgers. He scored five points (2-3) in a 13-9 win at St. John’s and became the top scoring Division I Statesman. Hill finished his career with 64 goals and 79 assists for 143 points. Overall, he ranks 10th in career assists and 18th in career points at Hobart.

Hobart’s first Tewaaraton Trophy Watch List selection, McCarthy started all 14 games this season. The four-year starter was tasked with defending the opposition’s top scoring threat from Day One. An honorable mention USILA All-American in 2004, McCarthy collected 29 ground balls this season and was invited to try out for the 2006 U.S. National Lacrosse Team. In 56 career games, he collected 114 ground balls.

David scored 24 goals and recorded two assists in 14 games this season, including 11 starts. He was second on the team in goals and tied for third in points. David was named to the ECAC Lacrosse League Weekly Honor Roll after scoring four goals against then 10th-ranked UMass. He also scored four goals in a 16-10 win over Rutgers.

The Statesmen completed their first season in the ECAC Lacrosse League with a 7-7 overall record and a 2-4 mark against conference foes.
