PITTSBURGH, Pa.—The Hobart College lacrosse team continued its strong start to the 2005 season, posting a 15-10 victory over Robert Morris University this evening at Fox Chapel High School. The Statesmen improve to 4-0 overall, their best start since the 1998 squad opened its year with eight straight wins.

Hobart got goals from nine different players, including a pair of hat tricks from sophomore Chris David (Georgetown Prep/Silver Springs, Md.) and first-year Daryl Veltman (Salisbury/Georgetown, Ontario). Senior Nate Hill (Hamburg/Hamburg, N.Y.) led all Statesmen scorers with six points on six assists.

Veltman started the scoring just 1:26 into the game, combining with Hill for the first of two times. The rookie attacker made it 2-0 just 40 seconds later with a man-up goal.

The Colonials (0-6) made it a 2-1 game at the 11:08 mark with a tally from Carlo Sunseri, but that would be as close as Robert Morris would get as the Statesmen rattled off eight of the next nine goals to take a 10-3 lead into halftime.

Trailing by seven after the first 30 minutes, the Colonials found the back of the net five times, including four in the final 2:52 of the quarter, to cut Hobart’s lead to four goals heading into the final frame. Andrew Watt and Brenden Young paced the attack with a pair of goals apiece.

Young finished the contest with a six points on two goals and four assists, while Watt had a team-high three goals.

The Statesmen defense stayed strong in the fourth quarter, allowing Robert Morris just three shots on goal to capture the five-goal victory.

Hobart outshot Robert Morris 41-24 for the contest and finished 2-for-4 on extra man opportunities and holding the Colonials to just 2-for-7. Junior Patrick Meade (Schenectady/Schenectady, N.Y.) picked up a game-high nine ground balls for the Statesmen.

Junior Mike DeSantis (Mountain Lakes/Mountain Lakes, N.J.) got his first career start as a Statesman, making four saves. Jason Dockum and John Kenney split time for the Colonials, combining to stop 10 shots.

Hobart will put its unbeaten record on the line on March 19, when ECAC Lacrosse League foe Georgetown University visits McCooey Field. Faceoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
