GENEVA, N.Y.—Hobart sophomore attackman Daryl Veltman (Salisbury School/Georgetown, Ontario) was named the All-ECAC preseason team this afternoon. The Statesmen’s leading scorer last season was named the ECAC Rookie of the Year.
Veltman became just the second Hobart player to record 50 points in a season since the program moved to Division I in 1995. He notched at least one point in every game as a first-year, including a season-high eight (4-4) against league co-champion Penn State. Veltman ranked 15th in the nation in points per game (3.57) and led the ECAC in assists per game (1.57). He was named the League’s Rookie of the Week three times.
Hobart finished the 2005 season with a 7-7 overall record, 2-4 in the ECAC. The Statesmen ranked ninth in the nation in scoring offense (11.14 gls/gm) and in faceoff winning percentage (.577), and 16th in man-down defense (.800). Hobart returns four starters and 28 letterman from that squad.
The Statesmen open their 104th varsity season at 2 p.m. on Feb. 25, when they square off against Bucknell University at the Haverford School outside of Philadelphia. Hobart has faced the Bison 18 times since the two schools first met in 1963, with the Statesmen holding a 15-3 series lead.
WEOS-FM (89.7/90.3 in Geneva, 88.1 in Ithaca) will broadcast the game live. WEOS also will offer live streaming audio via its Web site. Ted Baker will handle the play-by-play duties with Drew Slocum ’06 providing color commentary. The pregame show will begin at 1:30 p.m.
