Kerwick selects new assistant coach
July 19, 2004
GENEVA, N.Y.—Hobart Lacrosse Head Coach Matt Kerwick recently announced the appointment of T.W. Johnson to serve as the Statesmen’s top assistant coach during the 2005 season. Johnson, who joins the Hobart staff following three seasons as the head coach at Limestone College, replaces Brian Rodgers, who accepted a position with a private prep school near Baltimore.
“We are excited to have TW join the Hobart staff,” Kerwick said. ”He brings tremendous experience and leadership to the Statesmen program. As the leader of a national champion at Limestone, we know he is prepared to help Hobart continue its climb to the top of Division I lacrosse.”
During his three seasons with the Saints, Johnson posted an impressive record of 41-7 (.854), including a perfect 19-0 in Deep South Conference play and 9-0 in the Deep South Tournament. He led Limestone to three consecutive Deep South Championships and three straight NCAA Division II Championship games, including the 2002 title.
Johnson mentored 22 All-Deep South selections, including three straight Deep South Players of the Year. He also coached 16 USILA All-Americans, including two Division II Players of the Year.
“This is a great opportunity,” Johnson said. ”I’m looking forward to the challenge of working as an assistant at the next level with a great head coach, Matt Kerwick.”
The 2005 Hobart lacrosse team returns 37 of 41 letterwinners, including eight starters, from last season’s 9-7 NCAA Tournament team. The Statesmen are tentatively slated to open the 2005 campaign, the program’s first as a member of the ECAC Lacrosse League, on Feb. 26, against Butler at a site to be announced.
