March 6, 2006
GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart lacrosse team debuted at No. 19 in the first edition of the STX/USILA Division I Coaches Poll. The Statesmen are off to a 2-0 start for the third time in five seasons under Head Coach Matt Kerwick ’90.
Hobart opened the season with a 10-8 victory over Bucknell and followed that performance with a 13-8 win over Ohio State on March 4. The Bison and the Buckeyes were ranked 25th and 21st, respectively, in the Face-Off Yearbook preseason coaches poll.
The Statesmen have five games remaining against teams ranked in the STX/USILA top 20, including sixth-ranked Cornell, and four more against teams receiving votes.
Senior midfielder Patrick Meade (Schenectady/Schenectady, N.Y.), sophomore midfielder Sean Murphy (Bishop Timon-St. Jude/Buffalo, N.Y.), and sophomore attackman Daryl Veltman (Salisbury School/Georgetown, Ontario) share the team’s scoring lead with six points each.
Hobart returns to action on March 11, when the Statesmen play their home opener on McCooey Field against the University of Hartford. Faceoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
