Hoyas avoid upset minded Statesmen
March 18, 2006
WASHINGTON, D.C.—The 17th-ranked Hobart lacrosse team put a scare into eighth-ranked Georgetown this afternoon, but the Hoyas scored three late goals to escape with an 11-9 win over the Statesmen. Hobart slips to 3-2 on the season, 0-1 in the ECAC Lacrosse League, while Georgetown improves to 4-1, 2-0.
Sophomore midfielder Chris David (Georgetown Prep/Silver Springs, Md.) had a productive homecoming, leading the Statesmen with four goals, while red-shirt first-year David O’Quinn (Robinson/Burke, Va.) added a goal and three assists.
Eighteen seconds into the fourth quarter, O’Quinn scored an extra-man goal off an assist from sophomore Daryl Veltman (Salisbury School/Georgetown, Ontario) to give the Statesmen their only lead of the afternoon, 9-8.
The Hoyas rode the hot stick of Sean Denihan (5 gls, 1 asst) in the waning minutes of the fourth quarter. He netted a pair of goals and assisted on a third in the final 7:28 to avoid the upset.
Senior goalie Mike DeSantis (Mountain Lakes/Mountain Lakes, N.J.) made a career-high 13 saves for the Statesmen, while Miles Kass earned the win with 11 stops.
A back-and-fourth affair, the game was tied seven times, including a 5-5 deadlock at halftime and an 8-8 tally through three quarters. Ground balls and faceoffs were nearly even, with the Hoyas holding a slim 43-41 advantage on GBs and a 13-10 edge on restarts.
Hobart returns to action on March 25, when the Statesmen travel to Rutgers. Faceoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
