Second quarter surge leads Statesmen past Buckeyes, 13-8

March 4, 2006

Pat Meade

Meade led the charge with five points (3-2) as Hobart defeated Ohio State, 13-8, at HERSHEYPARK Stadium.

HERSHEY, Pa.—The Hobart lacrosse team used a seven-goal surge in the second stanza to cruise to a 13-8 victory over Ohio State University at HERSHEYPARK Stadium. Statesmen senior midfielder Pat Meade (Schenectady/Schenectady, N.Y.) led the charge with a season-high five points on two goals and three assists.

Sophomore midfielder Kevin Buchanan paced the Buckeyes with a game-high six points.

Using a methodic, ball-control strategy, the Buckeyes (0-3) dictated the first frame. First-year attacker Joel Dalgarno opened the scoring at the 7:05 mark with the first of his two goals on the afternoon. With just 40 seconds remaining, Buchanan strung together back-to-back goals to take a 3-0 advantage into the intermission.

Much of Hobart’s (2-0) success in the second stanza resulted from junior midfielder John Soden’s (Delbarton/Chester, N.J.) ability to control six of the nine faceoffs. Hobart was able to create its preferred fast-paced tempo and seize control of the contest. First-year attackman Jeff Colburn (Cicero-North Syracuse/Liverpool, N.Y.) and Meade sparked a seven-goal outburst with two tallies each, chasing OSU’s starting goalie Drew May (fives saves).

The Statesmen took a 7-4 lead into halftime.

Hobart continued to assert its will in the third quarter, as first-year attackman Daryl Veltman (Salisbury School/Georgetown, Ontario) and sophomore Sean Murphy (Bishop Timon-St. Jude/Buffalo, N.Y.) rocketed goals past first-year goalie John Bolen. The Statesmen built their largest lead of the contest, when junior midfielder Christopher David (Georgetown Prep/Silver Springs, Md.) scored two goals three minutes apart.

The resilient Ohio State squad scored four consecutive goals to cut its deficit to 11-8 with just 3:25 remaining in regulation, but Murphy and junior defenseman Chris Keough (Hicksville/Hicksville, N.Y.) each added an insurance goal to put the finishing touches on the Statesmen’s second straight victory.

In the cage, senior goalie Mike DeSantis (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) turned in another quality performance with nine saves, including seven in the second half.

Hobart returns to action at 1 p.m. on March 11, when the Statesmen make their home debut against the University of Hartford on McCooey Field.
