No. 10 UMass tops Hobart 13-7

April 15, 2006

AMHERST, Mass.—The Hobart lacrosse team fell into an early hole and never recovered, falling to 10th-ranked Massachusetts 13-7 at Garber Field this afternoon. The Statesmen slip to 4-6 overall, 0-5 in the ECAC, while the Minutemen improve to 8-2, 3-1.

Junior midfielder Chris David (Georgetown Prep/Silver Springs, Md.) scored twice for Hobart, while sophomore midfielder Nick Currie (East Corning/Corning, N.Y.) added a goal and an assist. Nine different UMass players scored goals, led by the three-point efforts of Sean Morris (2-1) and Rory Pedrick (1-2).

The Minutemen used the first quarter to race out to a 4-0 lead. UMass made it a 5-0 game less than a minute into the second quarter.

Red-shirt first-year David O’Quinn (Robinson/Burke, Va.) got the Statesmen on the board just over a minute later, finishing a feed from Currie. David gave Hobart back-to-back goals 58 seconds before halftime, to send the hosts into the break with a 5-2 lead.

The Minutemen netted back-to-back goals to start the second half to go up 7-2. The Statesmen made some noise, scoring three of the next four goals to trim their deficit to three, 8-5. Currie, David, and sophomore attackman Daryl Veltman (Salisbury School/Georgetown, Ontario) registered the Hobart goals spanning the third and fourth quarters, but UMass squashed thoughts of a comeback with five of the final seven goals.

Hobart senior goalie Mike DeSantis (Mountain Lakes/Mountain Lakes, N.J.) allowed six goals and made three saves in the first 32 minutes. First-year Brad Hester (Woodbridge/Woodbridge, Va.) allowed seven goals and made four stops in 25 minutes of relief work, while junior Brandon Baer (Locust Valley/Bayville, N.Y.) did not see a shot in the last three minutes of regulation. Doc Schneider turned away 13 Hobart offerings, while allowing six goals of Massachusetts.
