GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College lacrosse team defeated Canisius 11-10 tonight on McCooey Field. The Statesmen improve to 5-7 overall, while the Golden Griffins slip to 6-6.

Junior Jamie Kirk (Salisbury School/Orangeville, Ontario) led the Hobart offense with a goal and four helpers, raising his assist total to 36 on the season. Sophomore Jeff Colburn (Cicero-North Syracuse/Liverpool, N.Y.) tallied a goal and three assists, while junior Daryl Veltman (Salisbury School/Georgetown, Ontario) added two goals and an assist. Senior James Dussich (Manhasset/Manhasset, N.Y.) scored two goals for the Statesmen, including the game winner, marking the first time in his career he has scored more than once in a game.

Leading the Golden Griffins was senior Kevin Ross (St. Michael’s/Toronto, Ontario) with five goals and an assist, while junior Michael Blocho (Grand Island/Grand Island, N.Y.) netted four goals.

Canisius struck first, as Ross scored his first goal of the night less than 20 seconds into the game. Junior Nick Currie (Corning East/Corning, N.Y.) answered for the Statesmen, netting an extra-man goal a few minutes later. After trading goals again, Ross netted a man-up goal for the Golden Griffins, and the visitors took a 3-2 lead into the second quarter.

Hobart outscored Canisius 3-2 in the second period. The Golden Griffins held a two–goal lead with 6:14 left to play in the half, when Colburn and Kirk took over for the next two Statesmen goals. Kirk found Colburn for a score with less than three minutes left, followed quickly by Colburn setting up Kirk. The teams went into halftime tied at 5-5.

The Statesmen came out firing in the third quarter, netting four unanswered goals, and taking a 9-5 lead with just over five minutes remaining in the period. Canisius scored twice to end the period, cutting Hobart’s lead to 9-7 following a Blocho goal, assisted by Ross.

In the final stanza the Golden Griffins continued their comeback, scoring two goals in the first three minutes to even the game at 9-9. After seven minutes of scoreless action, Ross connected again for Canisius, giving his team a one-goal lead. Forty seconds later, junior Sean Murphy (Bishop Timon-St. Jude/Buffalo, N.Y.) tallied for the Statesmen, tying things up again at 10-10. With 2:11 left in regulation, Dussich scored his second goal of the night, assisted by Colburn, giving Hobart the lead for good.

Sophomore goalkeeper Brad Hester (Woodbridge/Woodbridge, Va.) earned his first win of the season for the Statesmen, collecting five saves along the way. First-year Brian Dell (Penfield/Penfield, N.Y.) stopped seven shots for the Golden Griffins, while senior Angus Dineley (St. Michael’s/Toronto, Ontario) stopped three and recorded the loss.

Hobart will be back in action on April 28 when it travels to Loyola for a non-league contest at 1 p.m.
