GENEVA, N.Y.—Seven Hobart College lacrosse players were honored at the 42nd Annual Block H Awards Banquet on April 30. Senior James Dussich (Manhasset/Manhasset, N.Y.), junior Daryl Veltman (Salisbury School/Georgetown, Ontario), junior Sean Murphy (Bishop Timon-St. Jude/Buffalo, N.Y.), senior Matthew Ranaghan (Cape Elizabeth/Cape Elizabeth, Maine), senior Chris Keough (Hicksville/Hicksville, N.Y.), junior Jamie Kirk (Salisbury School/Orangeville, Ontario), and first-year Mike Suits (Christian Brothers Academy/Jamesville, N.Y.) all received awards.

The Crook Family Award went to Veltman for his strong leadership, outstanding play, and sportsmanship. For the past three seasons, Veltman has been the team’s leading goal-scorer. Currently, he has 82 career goals and 42 career assists. This year he was named to the Tewaarton preseason watch list, which is equivalent to the Heisman in football, and posted 33 goals.

Kirk was honored with the William H. Dobbin ’40 Memorial Award for his outstanding offensive performance. A playmaker, Kirk led the nation in assists this year with 38. He is now 12th on Hobart’s all-time single season assist list, and took just nine games to break the Statesmen’s single-season Division I record (26). Kirk’s main target this season was Veltman; he helped on 21 of 33 Veltman goals.

The Lt. John Vandeverg ’50 Award honors the player who has shown the most improvement. This year, it went to Dussich. In his first three seasons, Dussich played in 18 games and totaled five goals and an assist. This season, the midfielder showed significant improvement, playing in all 14 games, and netting eight goals.

Murphy, a midfielder, was given the Kent W. Marbury ’62 Memorial Award for dedication and hard work. A co-captain, Murphy is a constant offensive threat for the Statesmen. This spring he netted 13 goals, including one game-winner, and tallied five assists. He will begin his senior season with 47 career points.

Keough’s scholarship, leadership, and determination earned him the Van Arsdale Award. A co-captain, the defender ends his career at Hobart after collecting 155 ground balls in 55 career games. This season, he picked up 36.

The C.R.A.G. Outstanding Defensive Player Award was presented to Ranaghan. Along with Keough, he anchored the defense this season scooping 75 ground balls, and ranking among the nation’s defensive leaders. For his career, Ranaghan tallied 107 ground balls in 48 games.

The Rookie Award went to Suits. In his first season as a Statesman, Suits played in every game. A midfielder, he totaled five goals and two assists, and collected 12 ground balls.

Hobart closed out its 2007 season at top-ranked Cornell last Friday.
