HARTFORD, Conn.—The Hobart lacrosse team raced out to a 5-0 lead and never looked back in a 17-5 triumph over Hartford at Al-Marzook Field. Sophomore attackman Jeff Colburn (CNS/Liverpool, N.Y.) scored a game-high four goals for the Statesmen.

Hobart (2-2) dominated every aspect of the contest, outshooting the Hawks (1-3) 48-28, holding a 52-39 advantage on ground balls, and winning faceoffs 19-7. The Statesmen killed off all five of Hartford's extra-man opportunities and scored on their lone man-advantage. Hobart also rode their hosts relentlessly, as the Hawks were unsuccessful on 12-of-29 clear attempts.

Junior attackman Daryl Veltman (Salisbury School/Georgetown, Ontario) took over the team points lead with three goals and an assist, raising his season total to 18 (15-3) and upping his career total to 99 (65-34). Only five Statesmen have record 100 career points since Hobart elevated its program to Division I in 1995.

The Statesmen also got a goal and two assists apiece from junior attackman Jamie Kirk (Salisbury/Orangeville, N.Y.) and junior midfielder Sean Murphy (Bishop Timon-St. Jude/Buffalo, N.Y.).

Faceoff specialist Dan Spinella (New Hartford/New Hartford, N.Y.) posted a 14-3 record at the X and collected a team-high six ground balls.

Senior Brandon Baer (Locust Valley/Bayville, N.Y.) earned the win, making nine saves in the first half. First-year Max Silberlicht (New Hartford/New Hartford, N.Y.) made two stops in the third quarter, while sophomore Brad Hester (Woodbridge/Woodbridge, Va.) and first-year Kevin Gibbs (Bridgton Academy/Ipswich, Mass.) combined for four stops in the fourth.

The Hawks sent three goalies into the contest. John McMahon was saddled with the loss after making 12 stops in three quarters of play.

Daniel Clough scored twice for Hartford.

Colburn scored the game's first two goals, followed by a pair of Veltman tallies. Colburn capped the first quarter scoring with his third goal of the contest.

The Hawks got on the board 25 seconds into the second quarter, but the Statesmen netted five of the next six goals to carry a 10-2 lead into halftime.

Hobart cruised through the second half, subbing liberally, and secured its second straight win. First-years Mike Suits (CBA/Jamesville, N.Y.), Kevin Curtin (Corcoran/Syracuse, N.Y.), and sophomore Sam Orr (Avon Old Farms/Simsbury, Conn.) all netted their first goal of the season. Curtain scored a second goal, with Hobart a man down, to close out the day's scoring.

The Statesmen are back in action on March 13, when they host Marist. Faceoff on McCooey Field is scheduled for 3 p.m. Fans can follow the game online by clicking on the live coverage link on the Hobart schedule page.
