March 3, 2007
GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College lacrosse team won its home opener this afternoon, dispatching Binghamton University 12-5 on McCooey Field. The Statesmen broke open a close contest with nine second half goals to improve to 1-2, while the Bearcats fall to 0-2.
Three Statesmen finished the game with four points. Junior attackman Daryl Veltman (Salisbury School/Georgetown, Ontario) netted four goals, while classmate Jamie Kirk (Salisbury School/Orangeville, Ontario) dished out four assists. Junior midfielder Sean Murphy (Bishop Timon-St. Jude/Buffalo, N.Y.) tallied two goals and two assists.
First-year midfielder Steve Carlson (Penn Yan Academy/Penn Yan, N.Y.) led Binghamton with two goals and an assist, while senior midfielder Nate Kerstein (Irondequoit/Rochester, N.Y.) added a pair of goals as well.
Thanks to an assist from Kirk, Veltman scored the game's opening goal on the extra-man at the 11:21 mark. Nine minutes later, Murphy finished a feed from Kirk to give Hobart a two-goal advantage.
The Bearcats won the ensuing faceoff and needed just eight seconds to record their first goal of the game on a shot by sophomore attackman Jake Boyce (Pittsford/Pittsford, N.Y.).
Veltman, set up by sophomore attackman Jeff Colburn (CNS/Liverpool, N.Y.), made it a 3-1 game with the only goal of the second quarter.
The Statesmen started the third frame with back-to-back scores by junior midfielder Nick Currie (Corning East/Corning, N.Y.) and Colburn. Carlson interrupted Hobart's flow with his first goal, but the Statesmen responded with consecutive goals by senior midfielder Chris David (Georgetown Prep/Silver Spring, Md.) and Murphy.
Binghamton managed back-to-back goals spanning the third and fourth quarters to cut Hobart's lead to 7-4, but, with a behind-the-back shot, Veltman sparked a 4-0 run that put the home team firmly in control.
Senior goalie Brandon Baer (Locust Valley/Bayville, N.Y.) earned the win with eight saves in 54 minutes, while first-year Max Silberlecht (New Hartford/New Hartford, N.Y.) turned away three of the four shots he faced in relief. Binghamton sophomore Larry Kline (Beverly/Beverly, Mass.) made a career-high 16 saves.
For the third straight game, Hobart won the battle for ground balls, collecting 40 to Binghamton's 27. Senior long-stick midfielder Matt Ranaghan (Cape Elizabeth/Cape Elizabeth, Maine) picked up a game-high seven GBs for the Statesmen.
Hobart also enjoyed a strong showing at the faceoff X. Junior Dan Spinella (New Hartford/New Hartford, N.Y.) won 10 of the 16 restarts he took, helping the Statesmen to a 10-8 advantage.
Hobart is back in action on March 6, when Robert Morris visits McCooey Field. Faceoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. and admission is free to all fans.
