GENEVA, N.Y.—The Tewaaraton Award Foundation announced its 2007 men’s lacrosse preseason watch list today. Hobart College junior attackman Daryl Veltman (Salisbury School/Georgetown, Ontario) is among the 51 players considered early contenders for the Tewaaraton Trophy.

Hobart’s leading scorer in each of his first two seasons, Veltman opened the 2007 campaign with two goals and two assists at third-ranked Syracuse on Feb. 18. He is tied for sixth in career assists (33) and eighth in both goals (52) and points (85) among Division I Statesmen. In 2005, Veltman scored 50 points and was named the ECAC Rookie of the Year. He followed that effort up with a 31-point season last year, earning second-team All-ECAC honors.

Veltman is the second Statesman to be named to the Tewaaraton preseason watch list. Two-time All-American defenseman Greg McCarthy ’05 was the first, earning a spot on the 2005 preseason list.

The list will be voted upon by coaches and narrowed as the season progresses, ultimately reaching a list of five who constitute the award’s finalists.

The Tewaaraton Award Foundation, in conjunction with the University Club of Washington, D.C., formally established the Tewaaraton Trophy on Aug. 29, 2000. Today, the Tewaaraton Trophy is recognized as the pre-eminent lacrosse award honoring the top female and male varsity collegiate lacrosse player in the United States. Simply, it is the lacrosse equivalent of the Heisman Trophy.

Veltman and the Statesmen will be back in action on Feb. 24, when they take on Bucknell University at the St. Paul’s School in Brooklandville, Md. Faceoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. Fans unable to attend the game can follow all of the action online by clicking on the live coverage link on the Hobart schedule page.
