July 7, 2003

GENEVA, N.Y.—Four members of the Hobart College lacrosse team were recently honored for their academic and athletic excellence by the Patriot League. Senior midfielder Shawn Powers (Colonie Central/Albany, N.Y.), junior attackman Geoff Zbikowski (C.W. Baker/Baldwinsville, N.Y.), sophomore midfielder Chris Scanlon (Corning West/Painted Post, N.Y.), and first-year defenseman Matt Murphy (Haverford School/Havertown, Pa.) represented the Statesmen on the League’s annual Academic Honor Roll.

To be named to the Patriot League’s Academic Honor Roll, a student-athlete must earn a 3.2 or better grade point average during the spring semester and earn a varsity letter.

Powers, who recently graduated with a bachelor’s degree in physics, was Hobart’s top defensive midfielder this season. He played in all 13 games, collecting 14 ground balls and notching an assist. At the 2003 Block H Awards Banquet, Powers won the Van Arsdale Award, presented annually to the member of the lacrosse team whose scholarship, leadership, and determination have proved to be superior.

For his career, Powers played in 29 games, recording two goals, an assist, and 34 ground balls, helping the Statesmen to a pair of Patriot League Championships (2000, ’02).

Also a physics major, Zbikowski played in nine games this season, recording a goal and an assist. A key reserve over the past three seasons, he has scored 14 points (4-10) in 24 career games. This is the second straight season Zbikowski has been named the Patriot League’s Men’s Lacrosse Academic Honor Roll.

Scanlon, a history major, played in 11 games this season, posting 11 goals, including a pair of hat tricks against Penn State and Loyola. In 20 career games, he boasts 14 points (13-1) and 32 ground balls.

Murphy is the only Hobart first-year to start every game this season. He led Statesmen defensemen in ground balls with 34. At Hobart College, students do not declare a major until the end of their sophomore year.

Hobart finished its 101st varsity season with a 5-8 record. The Statesmen finished third in the Patriot League with a 4-2 record. Since joining the Patriot League in 2000, Hobart has posted a 19-5 conference record (.792), won two league titles (2000, 2002), and has had 23 players earn All-Patriot League honors, more than any other team in the League.
