May 8, 2002 CENTRAL VALLEY, Pa.—The Hobart College lacrosse team placed five players on the All-Patriot League teams, while first-year Head Coach Matt Kerwick was named the League’s Coach of the Year. Junior attackman John Bogosian (Kent School/Massena, N.Y.) was the only repeat choice for the Statesmen, moving up from the second-team a year ago, to the first-team this season. Joining Bogosian on the first-team is junior midfielder Tim Booth (Waterloo/Waterloo, N.Y.) and junior defenseman Brad Neuberth (Westminster/Riverside, Conn.). First-year attackman Nate Hill (Hamburg/Hamburg, N.Y.) and junior goalie Mike Borsz (West Genesee/Camillus, N.Y.) garnered second-team honors. Kerwick led the Statesmen to a 5-1 mark in the Patriot League, earning a share of the conference crown with Army and Bucknell. Hobart (6-7) was awarded the League’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament based on a superior NCAA RPI rating. Kerwick and the Statesmen will square off with the Duke Blue Devils in the first round of the tournament at the University of Delaware, on May 12, at 3 p.m. Bogosian leads the team in goals (27) and shares the team lead in points (35) this season. He recorded a season-high five goals in a key Patriot League win over Bucknell on March 30, earning PL Offensive Player of the Week honors. In three seasons, Bogosian has registered 53 goals and 34 assists for 87 points. Booth has put together one of the most dominant seasons by a Hobart midfielder in recent memory. In addition to 14 goals, which rank third on the team, he’s won 134-of-220 faceoffs, the most by a Statesman since 1994 (209, Bobby Wynne ’94). Booth ranks 10th in the nation in faceoff winning percentage (.609). The two-time Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week also leads the team and ranks 10th in the nation in ground balls (82, 6.31/g), the most since Alex Mitchell ’99 collected 100 in 1997. For his career, Booth has 34 points (24-10), 175 ground balls, and is 301-of-502 (.600) on faceoffs. Neuberth has emerged as a jack-of-all-trades for the Statesmen. Following his first-year in the midfield, he was given a long-pole and played long-stick middie as a sophomore. This season, he changed positions yet again, moving to close defense. Neuberth has found a home. In addition to scoring his first collegiate goal (at Holy Cross) and more than doubling his career total with 41 ground balls this season, he has shut down some of the top attackmen in the nation, including Georgetown’s Steve Dusseau. Neuberth limited the nation’s leading goal scorer (3.7 gpg) to just a single tally in an 8-7 Hobart loss to the fourth-ranked Hoyas. Hill, who shares the team lead in points with Bogosian, is attempting to become the first Statesman to lead the team in scoring as a first-year since 1971 (Rick Gilbert ’74). Hill, who leads the team and ranks 14th in the nation in assists (23), has more helpers than any three of his teammates combined. He was named the League’s Rookie of the Week following a four-point performance at Army (1-3). Borsz ranks among the League leaders in goals against average (10.40) and save percentage (.577). The two-time Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week twice boosted his career-high for saves, turning away 22 shots at Army on March 9, and making 25 stops against Penn State a month later. Against the Patriot League, his numbers are even more impressive (8.91 GAA, .591 SV%). The Hobart lacrosse program is celebrating its centennial season in 2002. The Statesmen have won 16 national championships, including 13 at the Division III level from 1980 through 1993. Hobart ranks third in all-time men’s lacrosse wins with a record of 673-374-20. In 1995, Hobart elevated its program to Division I. The Statesmen earned
their first berth in the D-I field in 1998. Hobart joined the Patriot
League as an associate member in lacrosse in 2000, winning that season’s
League title and the accompanying automatic bid. In three seasons in the
League, the Statesmen are 15-3. |
