Statesmen and Herons to host eventful weekend

April 23, 2003

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart and William Smith Colleges lacrosse teams will play host to a variety of events this weekend. Including three games over the course of two days, the Statesmen and Herons will honor the seniors playing in their final home game, dedicate a new field, and honor the seven lacrosse greats being inducted into the Hobart Hall of Fame.

The weekend will begin with William Smith squaring off against Rensselaer on April 25, at 4 p.m. Sporting a 10-2 overall record and 6-0 in UCAA action, the Herons have clinched the top seed and home field advantage for the UCAA Tournament on May 3-4.

The following afternoon Hobart lacrosse will open the festivities when it goes up against 19th-ranked Loyola at noon. The Statesmen are 5-6 on the season and looking to move back to .500 with a win over the Greyhounds. Prior to faceoff, the eight seniors playing in their final home game and their parents will be honored.

In a lengthened halftime, the Colleges will have a ceremony, dedicating the campus’ all-weather turf stadium in honor of the father and grandfather who sent five children and one grandson to the Colleges. Made possible by a lead naming gift from the family of Herbert J. McCooey Sr., a former Wall Street broker, the facility will be named H.J. McCooey Memorial Field.

Hobart also will recognize the seven former lacrosse greats being inducted into the Hobart Hall of Fame at a reception later in the evening. James F. Calder ’79, Mark J. Darcangelo ’83, Edward I. Howard ’79, John W. Snape ’54, Shawn A. Trell ’89, Robert D. Wynne ’94, and the Rev. Joseph Leighton will raise the Hall of Fame’s roll to 82 Hobart legends.

Following the Statesmen’s contest, William Smith will suit up for its final regular season home game, matching up with Vassar College at 3 p.m. The Herons will recognize the five seniors playing in their final regular season contest prior to the draw.

Both William Smith contests, the Hobart-Loyola game, and the dedication ceremony will be carried live on WEOS radio 89.7/90.3 FM and online at www.weos.org.
