GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College lacrosse team used six unanswered goals midway through the second half to hold off a furious comeback effort by Bucknell University and score a 12-11 Patriot League win. Junior attackman John Bogosian (Kent School/Massena, N.Y.) led the Statesmen with a career-high five goals.

“We didn’t start particularly well, so it was nice to see us keep digging in and keep working,” Hobart Head Coach Matt Kerwick said.

Senior attackman Scott Harvey (Suffern/Cornwall, N.Y.) gave Hobart (4-3, 3-1 Patriot League) a 1-0 lead six minutes into the opening frame. Two minutes later, junior midfielder John Saunders (West Chester/West Chester, Pa.) erased the Statesmen’s lead, finishing a feed from first-year attackman Chris Cara (Patchogue-Medford/Medford, N.Y.). Saunders finished with two goals and an assist.

At the 3:42 mark, Cara registered the second of his four assists on the day on a Kelly Hogue (Corning West/Painted Post, N.Y.) tally to give the Bison (3-5, 2-1) their first lead of the day.

While Hobart never trailed by more than two goals, and tied the game at two, four, and seven, the Statesmen failed to retake the lead until the 4:07 mark of the third quarter. Bogosian keyed Hobart’s decisive six-goal run, pulling the Statesmen to within one, 7-6, at 7:09 of the third. He paid the price for a spectacular individual effort as he was driven to the turf after the shot, injuring his knee.

After junior midfielder Kris Shore (Liverpool/Liverpool, N.Y.), who played most of the contest with a separated shoulder, tied the game 24 seconds later, Bogosian returned to the field with a noticeable limp. There was no evidence of a limp though when he drove past his defender and beat Bison goalie Justin Sussman (Friends Academy/Towson, Md.) to give Hobart an 8-7 lead.

First-year attackman Nate Hill (Hamburg/Hamburg, N.Y.), junior midfielder Tim Booth (Waterloo/Waterloo, N.Y.), and first-year Nate Molinari (Oswego/Oswego, N.Y.) registered the first three goals of the fourth quarter to give the Statesmen a four-goal advantage with 5:46 left to play.

At that point, Bucknell junior Dennis Geraghty (St. Anthony’s/Kings Point, N.Y.) took the Herd on his back and nearly erased its deficit. He scored four times in the final five minutes, including a pair of extra-man goals at 1:49 and 0:23, but Bogosian’s fifth goal of the day, assisted by Hill, at the 3:50 mark proved to be the difference.

Hill matched Bogosian’s point total with two goals and three assists to maintain his team lead in points with 22 (8 goals, 14 assists). Booth provided the Statesmen with several key possessions, winning 15-of-20 faceoffs, including the restart after the Bison’s 11th goal.

Cara (1-4) and Geraghty (5-0) paced Bucknell with five points each.

Junior Mike Borsz (West Genesee/Camillus, N.Y.) earned the win in goal with 11 saves, including eight in the second half. Sussman finished with 16 stops.

Hobart’s win snapped an 11-game Patriot League win streak by the Bison.

The Statesmen return to action on April 3, against the new frontrunner in the Patriot League, Colgate (4-3, 1-0). The game will be an historic one on the Colleges’ campus, marking the first night game played at Hobart and William Smith. Faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
