GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College lacrosse team handed first-year Head Coach Matt Kerwick ’90 his first victory of the season, capturing the Statesmen’s home opener in convincing fashion. Hobart scored the first five goals of the contest en route to a 13-3 victory over the University of Vermont.

“I thought we came out very aggressive on the defensive end,” Kerwick said. “We played a good first half. That was a good home opener.”

The Statesmen, who struggled with clearing (13-of-24) and riding (5-of-21) in their season opener at Maryland, showed great improvement against the Catamounts. Vermont (0-1) converted just 2-of-9 clear attempts in the first quarter (7-of-23 for the game), while Hobart was 5-of-5 (17-of-24).

“That’s why we play those early games,” Kerwick said of the 13-6 loss to the sixth-ranked Terps. “We did a lot of riding and a lot of clearing this week in practice.”

The 2001 Statesmen struggled in the first quarter, scoring more than two goals in the opening frame only twice (Penn State 4, Holy Cross 8). Hobart showed little of that slow start tendency this afternoon.

Beginning at the 8:50 mark, the Statesmen got five goals from five different players in less than five minutes. Senior attackman Scott Harvey (Suffern/Cornwall, N.Y.) opened the scoring spree with an unassisted goal. First-year midfielder Nate Molinari (Oswego/Oswego, N.Y.) added an unassisted goal of his own at the 7:39 mark. Thirty seconds later, junior midfielder Tim Booth (Waterloo/Waterloo, N.Y.) chimed in off an assist from first-year midfielder Chris Scanlon (Corning West/Painted Post, N.Y.).

First-year attackman Nate Hill (Hamburg/Hamburg, N.Y.) registered his first collegiate goal with 6:21 on the clock. Junior attackman John Bogosian (Kent School/Massena, N.Y.) closed out the 5-0 burst at the 4:39 mark with an assist going to junior attackman Kris Shore (Liverpool/Liverpool, N.Y.).

Bogosian led Hobart with three goals and an assist on the day, while Shore (1-2) and Hill (1-2) each added three points.

Vermont got a pair of goals from sophomore midfielder Mark Prior (Henninger/Syracuse, N.Y.).

In the cage, junior Mike Borsz (West Genesee/Camillus, N.Y.) picked up the win with eight saves in the first 52 minutes, while first-year Dan Valente (Mount Hebron/Ellicott City, Md.) stopped both shots he faced in relief. Senior Edward Burns (Nottingham/Syracuse, N.Y.) made 11 saves for the Catamounts.

The Statesmen return to action on March 9, when they open their Patriot League schedule at Army. Faceoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
