Stifling defense grounds Hawks, 11-4

March 13, 2004

BETHLEHEM, Pa.—Coming off a convincing victory over Holy Cross, the Statesmen defense held Lehigh scoreless for the first 39 minutes to earn an 11-4 victory over the Mountain Hawks in Patriot League lacrosse action. Mark Williamson was the big scorer, tallying five goals, including four in a row.

Junior Chris Scanlon needed little time to light up the scoreboard, tallying the first goal of the game just 1:27 after the opening faceoff. Classmate Nate Molinari provided the assist for the game’s fist score. Junior Nate Hill notched the only other score of the session eight minutes later.

Williamson opened the second quarter with an unassisted goal, while Scanlon and senior Brian Joy got a piece of the action a few minutes later to make it a 5-0 game. It was all Williamson after that as the Corning native went on a personal four-goal run. He caught fire at the end of the first half and could not be stopped, scoring three goals in a span of 1:52.

David Walsh finally broke through the Hobart defense with 5:52 left in the third quarter to give the Mountain Hawks their first goal of the afternoon. Lehigh scored two more unanswered, but it was too late for a comeback as Joy and Patrick Meade fired home a pair of goals to secure the Hobart victory.

Joy had two goals and an assist on the afternoon, while Hill added a pair of helpers and a score to the Statesmen cause.

Junior goaltender Dan Valente made 12 stops in 45 minutes of action, while sophomore Mike DeSantis grabbed five in the final 15 minutes of play. Tom Ellis had 18 saves for the Mountain Hawks.
