Blue Devils defeat Statesmen 1-0

October 29, 2005

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College soccer team suffered a hard fought 1-0 season-ending loss to Fredonia State this afternoon on McCooey Field. The Statesmen completed the 2005 campaign with an overall record of 7-8-2, while the Blue Devils improved to 14-3-2.

Sophomore defender Matt Smith (Lockport/Lockport, N.Y.) netted the decisive goal in the 57th minute. Smith gathered a through pass from junior midfielder Jordan Berg (Jamestown/Jamestown, N.Y.) at the top of the 18-yard box and one-timed his third goal of the season into the top left corner of the net.

Fredonia senior goalkeeper Matt Borchard (Williamsville-South/Williamsville, N.Y.) made a driving stop on first-year midfielder Philipp Schoeniger’s (Lexington/Lexington, Mass.) header in the 55th minute to keep the match deadlocked at zero. Borchard turned away four Statesmen offerings to pick up the win.

First-year netminders Phil DaCosta (Memorial Manchester/Manchester, N.H.) and Pete Van Dellon (Webster Thomas/Webster, N.Y.) both worked a half. Dacosta made a pair of stops, while Van Dellon registered three saves in the loss.
