Bombers nip Statesmen soccer 1-0

October 12, 2004

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College soccer team outshot visiting Ithaca College, but were unable to overcome an early deficit, falling 1-0 this evening in non-conference action on Cozzens Field. The Bombers entered the game ranked 21st in the nation and third in the Northeast Region poll.

The Statesmen (4-9-0) attacked the Ithaca defense in the early going, but could not connect on any of their chances. After playing even soccer for much of the opening 15 minutes, the Bombers (8-2-1) forced a pair of corner kicks in the 17th minute. Hobart knocked Ithaca’s first try across the endline for another corner kick. This time first-year Mark Jeffries (Brighton/Rochester, N.Y.) put his cross right on the head of senior Nick Accomando (Lancaster Country Day/Lititz, Pa.) for the 1-0 lead at the half.

The second half proved to be much of the same for the Statesmen as they struggled to get behind an Ithaca defense that has allowed just seven goals all season. Hobart junior forward Micke Subotowicz (Farsta Gymnasium/Stockholm, Sweden) had a chance in the 74th minute, but his shot sailed just over the crossbar.

In goal, Ben Tamberella (St. Peter’s Prep/Hoboken, N.J.) had three stops for the Statesmen, while Scott Fox (Pittsford Sutherland/Pittsford, N.Y.) and Ted Meyer (Strath Haven/Wallingford, Pa.) combined to make two stops.

Hobart returns to action on Oct. 16, traveling to Nazareth College for a 1 p.m., kickoff. This match will be the teacher vs. pupil as Hobart Head Coach Shawn Griffin faces new Nazareth boss Danny Gilbertson for the first time. Griffin mentored Gilbertson for 10 years—as a player and assistant coach at Plymouth (N.H.) State, and as an assistant for the Statesmen.
