Eagles soar over Statesmen, 1-0

September 10, 2005

GENEVA, N.Y.—Senior forward Greg Dini (Sayville/Sayville, N.Y.) scored the game-winning goal in the 81st minute to lead the Brockport Golden Eagles soccr team to a hard fought 1-0 victory over the Hobart Statesmen this afternoon at Cozzens Field.

After an evenly played first half, Brockport (4-0) capitalized on a golden scoring opportunity in the final 10 minutes of the game. Dini used his explosive speed to gather a through ball along the left flank of the Hobart (2-1-1) defense. Once past the Statesmen defensive third, Dini cut into the box and softly chipped the decisive goal over the outstretched arms of diving Hobart goalkeeper Phil DaCosta (Manchester Memorial/Manchester, N.H.). The Golden Eagles outshot the Statesmen by a margin of 12-9, including firing eight shots on DaCosta in the second half. DaCosta finished the game with five saves.

In the early minutes of the first half, Hobart had a great opportunity to take the lead as first-year forward Dan Riso (Red Hook Central/Red Hook, N.Y.) outran a Brockport defender to a ball at the top of the box. Unable to control his dribble, Brockport goalie Chris Bedford (Maine Central Institute/Penfield, N.Y.) smothered the scoring opportunity. Bedford turned away five Hobart offerings to earn the shutout win.

Hobart will look to rebound from its first loss when they travel to Utica on Sept. 14 for a 4:30 p.m. kickoff.
