Golden Knights sneak past Statesmen in overtime

October 22, 2004

GENEVA, N.Y.—Clarkson University senior forward Mark Bahr (Rome Free Academy/Rome, N.Y.) tallied the golden goal in the 93rd minute to lead the Golden Knights to a 3-2 overtime victory over Hobart College this evening in Liberty League soccer action. This is the Statesmen’s fourth overtime loss this season and eighth loss by just one goal.

Hobart senior Juan Vargas (Del Valle/El Paso, Texas) got things started in the third minute, one-timing a Dan Abroms (Pomfret School/New Canaan, Conn.) pass with the outside of his foot into the right upper ninety for a 1-0 lead. Nearly 10 minutes later it was Abroms finding the back of the net this time after the Golden Knights failed to clear the corner kick.

Hobart dominated the action for the rest of the half with as they pushed the pace of the game and dominated possession. Playing organized soccer through all thirds of the field, the Statesmen held Clarkson to one shot in the opening 45 minutes to take a 2-0 lead into the break.

The Golden Knights picked up their level of play in the second half and stormed back to within one in the 55th minute after sophomore Ismael Mohammad (East/Rochester, N.Y.) took advantage of a failed clearance by Hobart to tally his third goal of the season.

Bahr evened the score at two in the 74th minute with a perfectly placed shot into the left upper ninety from the right flank. The Statesmen pressed forward in the closing 15 minutes, getting quality opportunities, but were unable to find the back of the net.

Playing overtime for the second consecutive game, Hobart junior Micke Subotowicz (Farsta Gymnasium/Stockholm, Sweden) nearly ended the game 1:14 in, but his shot skipped just wide of the left post.

Just over a minute later it was Bahr taking a flick from sophomore Justin Crowley (Mexico Academy/Central Square, N.Y.) and slipping it by Hobart keeper Ben Tamberella (St. Peter’s Prep/Hoboken, N.J.) for the game-winner. Mohammad also assisted on the play.

The Statesmen dominated the shots in the contest with a 21-9 edge and won the corner kick battle 8-2.

Tamberella had a solid outing, making three stops, while Clarkson (5-10-0, 2-4-0 Liberty) goalie David Hennessey (Shoreham/Wading River, N.Y.) had eight saves.

The Statesmen return to action on Oct. 23, hosting eighth-ranked St. Lawrence in their final regular season home match. The game is scheduled to kick off at 2 p.m., on Cozzens Field.
