Hobart blanks Utica College, 3-0
September 15, 2004
GENEVA, N.Y.—Hobart College got goals from three different players to blank visiting Utica College, 3-0 in non-conference soccer action this afternoon on Cozzens Field. The Statesmen garner their first home victory of the season and improve to 2-3-0 overall.
Controlling the run of play early in the contest, Hobart first-year midfielder Brad Weinberg (Marcellus/Marcellus, N.Y.) fired a flick from senior attacker Ricky Klotz (Homer/Cortland, N.Y.) into the left upper ninety for his first career goal. The Statesmen continued to dominate the time of possession for much of the first half. The Pioneers (1-2-0) nearly tied the score in the 34th minute, but Dylan Delamarter’s (Ilion/Ilion, N.Y.) header sailed just over the crossbar.
Sophomore Brett Klebanoff (Duxbury/Duxbury, Mass.) made it a 2-0 game three minutes later when he touched in a driven Matt Vesonder (Mountain Lakes/Boonton Township, N.J.) corner kick left untouched as it crossed the box.
Hobart came out of the break with a 2-0 advantage and never let down, continuing to create scoring opportunities. Junior Micke Subotowicz (Farsta Gymnasium/Stockholm, Sweden) added a third tally in the 74th minute off an assist from senior Dan Abroms (Pomfret School/New Canaan, N.J.). That would be all Hobart needed as its defense stifled the Pioneer offense for much of the second half.
First-year goalie Ben Tamberella (St. Peter’s Prep/Hoboken, N.J.) earned his first career shutout as a Statesman with five saves, while Utica keeper Anthony DeSarro (Cicero-N. Syracuse/Liverpool, N.Y.) had 10 stops for the afternoon.
