GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College soccer team defeated Vassar College 2-0 in Liberty League action this afternoon on Cozzens Field. The Statesmen improve to 6-7-2, 2-4-0 in Liberty League play, while the Brewers fall to 3-7-3, 0-4-2 in the conference.
Senior striker Micke Subotowicz (Farsta Gymnasium/Stockholm, Sweden) pounced on a rebound for the game-winner in the 57th minute. Sophomore midfielder Bradley Weinberg (Marcellus/Marcellus, N.Y.) generated the scoring opportunity by sending a through ball to first-year midfielder Dan Riso (Red Hook Central/Red Hook, N.Y.) inside the 18-yard box. Riso ripped a right-footed shot, but Vassar goalkeeper Jason Cetel (Cherry Hill East/Cherry Hill, N.J.) deflected the offering to his right. Hobart’s leading scorer ran onto the ball and drilled his eighth goal of the season.
The Statesmen added an insurance goal in the 87th minute as Philipp Schoeniger (Lexington/Lexington, Mass.) one-timed a feed from Riso past Cetel. Subotowicz created the scoring opportunity by sending a crossing pass from the left flank to Riso.
Hobart’s defense stifled the Brewers’ offense, limiting them to seven shots. Statesmen first-year goaltender Phil DaCosta (Manchester Memorial/Manchester, N.H.) registered four saves to pick up his fourth win of the season, while Catel turned away seven Hobart offerings.
The Statesmen will close out their Liberty League schedule when they host Rensselaer (7-6-2, 1-4-1) on Oct. 22 at 2 p.m.
