Statesmen clip Cardinals, 2-1

September 27, 2005

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College men’s soccer team netted a pair of first half goals to defeat St. John Fisher 2-1 this afternoon on Cozzens Field. Senior John Rosenbaum (Stockholm/Sundbyberg, Sweden) recorded the game-winner at the 30:07 mark. The victory improves Hobart to an overall record of 4-4-1, while the Cardinals fall to 5-5-0.

Sophomore Bradley Weinberg (Marcellus/Marcellus, N.Y.) staked the Statesmen to a 1-0 advantage in the sixth minute as he pounced on the rebound from Ricky Carvalho (Hollis-Brookline/Hollis, N.H.) blast from 30-yards out.

With Hobart’s offense clicking on all cylinders, Rosenbaum volleyed the decisive goal into the middle of the net off a beautiful crossing pass from sophomore Tyler Webster (Acton Boxboro/Acton, Mass.) past St. John Fisher goalkeeper Paul Illulkor (Bishop Kearney/Kampala, Unganda). Rosenbaum tallied his second goal of the season.

The Cardinals cut the Statesmen’s lead in half during the closing minutes of the first half when Josh Foster (Whitesboro, Utica, N.Y.) sliced in behind the Hobart defense and ripped a shot past Statesmen first-year goaltender Phil DaCosta (Manchester Memorial/Manchester, N.H.). Sophomore Mike Annechino (Penfield/Rochester, N.Y.) sent a through ball to spring Foster.

DaCosta turned away eight St. John Fisher offerings to record his second win of the season, while Illulkor saved a shot in the loss.

Hobart will welcome conference rival Hamilton to Cozzens Field on Oct. 1. Kickoff is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.
