GENEVA, N.Y.—Hobart College junior Micke Subotowicz (Farsta Gymnasium/Stockholm, Sweden) knocked home a penalty kick in the 72nd minute as the Statesmen soccer team handed visiting Hamilton College a 1-0 loss, its first Liberty League loss of the season. The Statesmen now move into second place with the Continentals in the League standings.

The first half saw a lot of up-and-down action, but neither team was really able to generate any dangerous opportunities. Hobart (4-6-0, 2-1-0 Liberty League) had more dangerous chances in the early going as the Statesmen played organized soccer. Despite the back and forth play throughout much of the stanza, Hobart and the Continentals (6-2-0, 2-1-0 Liberty League) only generated a total of five shots.

Coming out of the break the Statesmen continued to play solid defense allowing Hamilton just three shots and only two on net in the final 45 minutes. Hobart nearly took a 1-0 lead in the 59th shot when Subotowicz fired a shot from the left corner of the box, but Continental goalie Anthony Tripicchio (Pingry School/Clark, N.J.) tipped just enough of the ball, causing it to hit the crossbar and come straight down.

Just over 13 minutes later sophomore Ben Crosky (Mount Greylock/Williamstown, Mass.) got loose in the box and was tripped up from behind resulting in a penalty kick. Subotowicz stepped up and buried the shot into the left corner to put Hobart up 1-0 with 18 minutes left to play.

The Statesmen defense stayed strong down the stretch to hold on to the 1-0 victory over the Continentals. Hobart outshot Hamilton 10-5 as first-year goalie Ben Tamberella (St. Peter’s Prep/Hoboken, N.J.) notched his second shutout of the year with three saves. Tripicchio made two stops on the afternoon.

The Statesmen return to action on Oct. 8, traveling to Rensselaer for a Liberty League match at 4 p.m.
