GENEVA, N.Y.—Hobart College senior forward Ricky Klotz (Homer/Cortland, N.Y.) scored twice in a two minute span to force overtime, but it wasn’t enough as the Statesmen soccer team fell to Kings Point 3-2 in double overtime this afternoon. First-year David Poulnot (Bishop England/Sullivans Island, S.C.) notched the golden goal in the 108th minute for the Mariners.

Klotz nearly got things started for Hobart (0-2-0) in the third minute with a hard low shot, but Kings Point goalie James Papazis (Archbishop Molly/Malverne, N.Y.) was able to get a hand on it and deflect it away from the goal. It was all Mariners (3-0-0) after that as senior Everet Lindholm (Moorestown/Covington, La.) got open behind the Statesmen defense on a counter attack and found a wide-open Kyle Flynn (Arlington/Poughquag, N.Y.) in the box who chipped it over Hobart goalie Ben Tamberella’s (St. Peter's Prep/Hoboken, N.J.) head for a 1-0 lead just seven minutes into the game.

Just over four minutes later Lindholm got around a Hobart defender and fired a perfectly placed shot into the right side netting for a 2-0 lead. Kings Point took that lead into halftime.

Despite controlling the run of play in the second half, all Hobart needed was the final 2:30 to find the back of the next twice. Klotz headed home a Matt Vesonder (Mountain Lakes/Boonton Township, N.J.) corner kick in the 88th minute to make it a 2-1 game. Klotz struck again two minutes later with a shot into the right corner after a long ball from first-year Harris Goldman (Morris Hills/Rockaway, N.J.) to force overtime.

After a scoreless first overtime session and with less than three minutes left to play, the Mariners’ (3-0-0) Poulnot got open in the Statesmen box and chipped a shot over Hobart goalie Tamberella’s head for the 3-2 double overtime win. Junior Nick Dandapani (Joel Barlow/Greenwich, Conn.) assisted on the game winner.

The Statesmen outshot Kings Point 22-14, including an 11-2 edge in the second half. Hobart also held a 7-2 advantage on corner kicks.

Tamberella had five saves for the Statesmen, while Papazis made seven stops for the Mariners.

Hobart returns to action on Sept. 8, hosting RIT on Cozzens Field. The game is scheduled to kick off at 4 p.m.
