Thoroughbreds race past Statesmen, 2-1

October 7, 2005

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—The Hobart soccer team suffered a tough 2-1 conference setback at the hands of Skidmore this afternoon on Wagner Field. The Thoroughbreds improve to an overall record of 8-1-2 and 2-0-1 in the Liberty League, while the Statesmen fall to 5-5-1 and 1-3-0 in conference action.

Skidmore raced out to an early two-goal advantage just 19 minutes into the contest. Junior Van Haskell (Rivers School/Needham, Mass.) netted his fourth goal of the season off an assist from Ty Thiele at the 12:30 mark. The Thoroughbreds increased their lead less than six minutes later as junior Mark Melly (Farmington/Farmington, Conn.) ripped a shot past first-year Hobart goaltender Phil DaCosta (Manchester Memorial/Manchester, N.H.). DaCosta registered five saves on the afternoon.

The Statesmen cut Skidmore’s lead in half in the 79th minute when senior forward Micke Subotowicz (Farsta Gymnasium/Stockholm, Sweden) connected on a penalty kick. Subotowicz scored his sixth goal of the season and third via penalty kick.

Hobart will travel to Union College on Oct. 8 for a 2 p.m. conference showdown.
