Wilby replaces Gilbertson on Hobart soccer coaching staff
August 10, 2004
GENEVA, N.Y.—Brad Wilby, a 2004 graduate of Plymouth State University, has been hired to assist Hobart College Soccer Head Coach Shawn Griffin. Wilby replaces Danny Gilbertson, who recently accepted the head coaching job at Nazareth College.
“Brad is coming off an outstanding playing career at Plymouth,” Griffin said. “I’m confident he’ll be an exceptional addition to our staff.”
A former goalkeeper, Wilby begins his coaching career after completing a highly successful playing career with the Panthers. A 2003 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) first-team All-New England selection, he posted an 11-4-2 record with 10 shutouts while leading PSU to a share of the Little East Conference regular season title and the semifinals of the ECAC New England Tournament. Wilby posted a career-high .879 save percentage and a career-low 0.63 goals against average en route to earning Plymouth State’s Paul E. Arnold Varsity Club Male Athlete of the Year Award.
A native of Haddonfield, N.J., Wilby started 67 of the 71 games he played for the Panthers, posting a 1.17 goals against average, a .797 save percentage, 19 shutouts, and a 37-24-5 record.
Hobart returns 16 players that started at least one game for the 2003 squad that was 14-7-1, one win shy of the school record, and finished second in the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association—renamed the Liberty League over the summer—Tournament. The Statesmen will open the season on Cozzens Field at 1 p.m., on Sept. 4, when Geneseo visits Geneva.
