Yellowjackets defeat Statesmen, 2-1

September 17, 2005

GENEVA, N.Y.—The sixth-ranked University of Rochester soccer team defeated Hobart 2-1 this afternoon on Cozzens Field. Rochester improves its record to a perfect 5-0-0, while the Statesmen fall to 3-2-1.

Junior forward Brian Tuohy (Hun School/Sayerville, N.J.) used the back of his heel to flick the ball into the open net, staking the Yellowjackets to a 1-0 lead at the 19:55 mark. Sophomore Nico Mikolenko (Fairport/Fairport, N.Y.) generated the scoring opportunity by lofting a corner kick into the middle of the 18-yard box. First-year Hobart goalkeeper Phil DaCosta (Manchester Memorial/Manchester, N.H.) deflected the corner kick, but Tuohy gathered the rebound to record his first goal of the season.

Rochester padded its lead in the 46th minute as senior forward Nate Micklos (William Fremd/Palatine, Ill.) ripped a shot into the lower right corner. The goal was assisted by Colin Fenrie (Thomas Worthington/Worthington, Ohio).

The Yellowjackets had a golden opportunity to extend their lead at the 53:44 mark, when Micklos was awarded a penalty kick. Diving to his right, DaCosta deflected the offering and completely turned the momentum into the Statesmen’s favor. DaCosta finished the game with nine saves.

Hobart senior forward John Rosenbaum (Stockholm University of Physical Education/Sundbyberg, Sweden) netted his first goal of the season in the 80th minute to cut Rochester’s lead in half. Classmate Micke Subotowicz (Farsta Gymnasium/Stockholm, Sweden) created the scoring opportunity by beating the Yellowjackets’ goalkeeper Paco Corbalan (Elmira Free Academy/Elmira, N.Y.) along the left edge of the 18-yard box and sent a crossing pass to Rosenbaum, who buried it into the vacant net. Corbalan turned away seven Statesmen offerings to record the win.

Rosenbaum provided Hobart with its final scoring chance at the 82:21 mark when he blasted a shot off the crossbar.

Hobart will return to action on Sept. 23 at 4 p.m., traveling to St. Lawrence.
