Hobart downs Vassar in Liberty League opener

September 22, 2005

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.—The Hobart soccer team defeated Vassar College 2-1 in the Liberty League opener for both teams today. The Statesmen improve to 6-1-0 overall, 1-0 in the league, while Vassar drops to 3-3-0 and 0-1 in league play.

Two first-half goals lifted Hobart over the Brewers. After a goal by Vassar’s Court Steiner in the 24th minute, Statesman Sam Wisner (Wayland/Wayland, Mass.) scored to tie the game at 1-1 off an assist from Tucker Crockett (Episcopal Academy/Rosemont, Pa.).

With 11 seconds left to play before the break, Hobart sophomore Philipp Schoeniger (Erlangen/Erlangen, Germany) netted what would become the game-winning goal, unassisted.

Sophomore goalkeeper Pete Van Dellon (Webster Thomas/Webster, N.Y.) (3-0-0) tallied two saves for the Statesmen.

Hobart returns to action on Sept. 23 when they travel to take on Rensselaer in a conference match at 1 p.m.
