September 5, 2005
GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart soccer team is currently ranked 15th in the nation and second in the Northeast Region, according to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). The NSCAA rankings are voted on weekly by coaches across the country. Hobart was not ranked in the preseason poll.
The Statesmen opened their season with a pair of wins last weekend at the Golisano Children’s Hospital Tournament hosted by Brockport. Hobart rolled through the first round, defeating Alfred 6-1, before securing a 1-0 overtime win over the host Golden Eagles.
Sophomore forward Dan Riso (Red Hook Central/Red Hook, N.Y.) was named Tournament MVP after he led the Hobart offense against Alfred (3 goals), while classmate Keenan Simons (Cardinal Mooney/Bradenton, Fla.), first-year Grant Morrison (Gleniffer/Paisley, Scotland), and senior captain Jamie Smith (Cheshire/Cheshire, Conn.) were named to the All-Tournament Team.
Plattsburg State sits ahead of Hobart at No. 1 in the region and No. 3 in the country, while Ithaca and Rochester are ranked third and fourth in the Northeast. Messiah (Pa.) holds the top spot in the nation.
Hobart will host RIT for a non-conference game on Sept. 7 at 4:30 p.m. on Cozzens Field.
