GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart soccer team pulled out a 1-0 Liberty League victory over St. Lawrence University in double overtime this afternoon on Cozzens Field. The nationally-ranked Statemen improve to 10-1-0 overall, and remain the top team in the league with a 4-0-0 conference record. The Saints drop to 5-3-2 and 1-1-1 in league action.
The win snapped Hobart’s 15-game losing streak to St. Lawrence. Prior to today, the Statesmen had not defeated the Saints since the 1992 season (2-0) and had not prevailed in Geneva since 1991 (2-1).
The game remained scoreless through 105 minutes of play, thanks to two strong defenses. Sophomore Dan Riso (Red Hook Central/Red Hook, N.Y.) finally broke through in the 106th minute of play to score the Statesmen’s game-winning goal on a one-on-one breakaway with Saint’s goalie Emilio Coletta (Marianapolis College/Montral, Quebec).
The teams were evenly matched, with the Statesmen taking seven shots on goal to the Saints’ eight. Sophomore goalkeeper Phil DaCosta (Manchester Memorial/Manchester, N.H.) recorded six saves to pick up his second shutout of the season, while Coletta stopped six shots of his own.
Hobart will host Clarkson University tomorrow (10/7) for another Liberty League match at 2 p.m. Fans unable to attend the game can listen live on WEOS-FM (89.7/90.3 in Geneva, 88.1 in Ithaca), or follow the game online.
