GENEVA, N.Y.—The Statesmen Athletic Association and the Hobart Athletics Department honored the top student-athletes of 2006-07 at the 42nd Annual Block H Awards on April 30. Four Hobart soccer student-athletes were honored.

Sophomore Matt Schwartz (Lower Merion/Wynnewood, Pa.) received the Ray Demuth Award, senior Jamie Smith (Cheshire/Cheshire, Conn.) was given the Stephen R. Murphy ’77 Memorial Award, senior Brett Klebanoff (Duxbury/Duxbury, Mass.) was honored with the Geoffrey S. Perselay ’75 Award, and first-year Sam Wisner (Wayland/Wayland, Mass.) received the Rookie Award.

A co-captain, Smith was tabbed the Statesmen’s most valuable player for the 2006 season, and honored with the Murphy Award for his determination and commitment to the team that proved to be inspirational to his teammates and coaches. Smith led a solid defense this fall that allowed just two goals in league play, recorded a 0.80 goals allowed average, and earned nine shutouts.

Schwartz earned the Demuth Award by exhibiting significant improvement, untiring perseverance, and the will to win this season, while Klebanoff was honored with the Perselay Award for his hard work and inspiration to the Hobart soccer program. Schwartz finished the season with three goals and an assist, and Klebanoff closed out his career with a goal and two assist in 36 career games.

A midfielder, Wisner was presented with the team’s Rookie Award. He played in 16 games, and stepped into a starting role for six games. He finished his inaugural season with three goals, two of which were game-winners.

These Statesmen led the soccer team to one of its most successful seasons to date, posting a 12-4-3 overall record and advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history.
