October 27, 2001 GENEVA, N.Y.--The SUNY Fredonia soccer team scored three unanswered goals to defeat Hobart College, 3-1, in its last home game of the season. First-year forward Joel Andruski (Shenendehowa/Clifton Park, N.Y.) put the Statesmen on board first, burying a rebound off a shot by first-year midfielder Juan Vargas (Del Valle/El Paso, Texas) at the 7:43 mark. The Blue Devils' aggressive play earned them a corner kick three minutes later. Senior midfielder Blair Engel (Fayetteville-Manlius/Manlius, N.Y.) lofted the ball into the box where sophomore midfielder Tim Wyand (Penfield/Rochester, N.Y.) knocked it in to tie the game at 1-1. In the 41st minute Engel set up first-year forward Brian Abrams' (Brockport/Brockport, N.Y.) eventual game-winner for a 2-1 Fredonia lead. In the second half, both teams played a wide open game. In the 51st minute Abrams intercepted a Hobart pass and fed senior forward Chris Whitmore (Lockport/Lockport, N.Y.) who closed the scoring with the Blue Devils third goal. For the remainder of the game, both teams traded missed opportunities. The Statesmen missed an empty net and had a goal disallowed because the scorer was offside. Fredonia was robbed of several sure goals by junior goalie Cory Rosier (Liverpool/Liverpool, N.Y.), but held on for the 3-1 victory. In goal, Rosier finished with a season-high 15 saves for Hobart. Sophomore Adam Flanders (Liverpool/Liverpool, N.Y.) stopped seven shots for the Blue Devils (13-4). The Statesmen (6-9-3) wrap up the season on Oct. 31, when they travel to RIT for a 3 p.m. contest.
