Continentals slip past Statesmen

October 16, 2002

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College soccer team gave up two goals in the second half, losing to UCAA rival Hamilton College, 2-1. The Statesmen fall to 7-6-1 overall and 2-3 in UCAA play in 2002.

Battling the rain and the cold, Hobart took a 1-0 lead over the nationally ranked Continentals in the 39th minute when first-year Jamie Smith (Cheshire/Cheshire, Conn.) headed in a corner kick by first-year Micke Subotowicz (Farsta Gymnasium/Stockholm, Sweden). The Statesmen would be able to hold that lead until the 74th minute when Schuyler Gellatly (Northfield-Mt. Hermon/Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) took advantage of a defensive miscue and slipped the ball past Hobart goalie Cory Rosier (Liverpool/Liverpool, N.Y.). Just six minutes later Hamilton’s Dave Alchus (The Pingry School/Scotch Pines, N.J.) netted the game winner off a Mike Thompson (Columbia/North Greenbush, N.Y.) service.

Rosier went the distance, pulling in six saves while Continentals’ goalies Greg Zalasky (Delaware Valley/Milford, Pa.) and Lars Hedberg (Minnechaug Regional/Wilbraham, Mass.) combined for six saves on the day.

The Statesmen return to action on Oct. 19, traveling to Alfred University for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
