Fried collects UCAA weekly honor for third time

Carl Fried

November 3, 2003

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association recently named Hobart College goalkeeper Carl Fried (Nacka Gymnasium/Alta, Sweden) its Men’s Soccer Rookie of the Week. This is the third time in the past four weeks he has earned the weekly honor.

Fried gave up just one goal in 180 minutes of action to lead the Statesmen to a 2-0 week to close out regular season play. He grabbed five saves in a 2-0 win over Nazareth, posting his third shutout of the year. Three days later, Fried pulled in three stops as Hobart defeated Fredonia 2-1 for its 13th victory of the year. He finished the week with a .889 save percentage and 0.50 goals against average.

The win over the Blue Devils marked the first time the Statesmen have captured at least 13 victories in a season since the 1992 squad went 15-0-1 and just the sixth time in the program’s history a team has won at least 13 games.

Hobart returns to action on Nov. 8, in the UCAA Semifinals at St. Lawrence. The third seeded Statesmen will take on second seeded Hamilton College at 1:30 p.m. The winner of the game advances to the championship match on Nov. 9, at 1 p.m., and the chance to play for the automatic qualifying spot in the NCAA Tournament.
