Geneseo upsets Hobart in ECAC semifinal, 4-0

November 15, 2003

GENEVA, N.Y.—Fourth seeded Geneseo State University upset top seeded Hobart College this afternoon on McCooey Field in the first semifinal of the ECAC Northeast Men’s Soccer Championship. The Blue Knights scored twice in each half to earn a spot in Sunday’s championship game at 1 p.m.

Geneseo (11-6-3) opened the scoring in the 22nd minute when senior midfielder Erik Swanson (Guilderland/Guilderland, N.Y.) took advantage of a defensive lapse in the back by the Statesmen. Swanson intercepted a back pass intended for Hobart first-year keeper Carl Fried (Nacka Gymnasium/Alta, Sweden) and drove home his fourth goal of the season.

The Blue Knights took a 2-0 lead into halftime when senior forward Domenico Marsocci (Greece Olympia/Rochester, N.Y.) chipped a bouncing ball over Fried (2 saves) with just 43 seconds remaining in the opening stanza.

Senior forward Brian Amick (Pittsford Mendon/Pittsford, N.Y.) and junior forward Tyler Ferrara (Aquinas/Rochester, N.Y.) added second half tallies in the 60th and 73rd minutes, respectively.

Despite holding a 16-11 advantage in shots, the host Statesmen could not solve goalie Chris Stock (Penfield/Penfield, N.Y.). The junior finished with five saves.

Geneseo will face the winner of the afternoon’s second semifinal, No. 3 Rochester/No. 2 Plattsburgh, for the ECAC Northeast Championship.

Eleven years removed from its last postseason appearance, Hobart finishes the season with a 14-7-1 record, one win shy of the school record.
