September 16, 2001 GENEVA, N.Y.--The Hobart College soccer team shutout Vassar College 3-0, to give Head Coach Shawn Griffin his 100th career victory as a collegiate head coach. The Statesmen and Griffin had been stuck on 99 since their season-opening win against Hiram College on Sept. 1, but broke out with three goals to open their Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association schedule with a victory. Hobart came out strong in the first half, firing the first five shots of the game. The Statesmen finally got on the board in the 27th minute when first-year midfielder Dan Abroms (Pomfret School/New Canaan, Conn.) set up first-year forward Ricky Klotz's (Homer/Cortland, N.Y.) fourth goal of the season for a 1-0 lead. The assist was Abroms' first collegiate point. In the second half, Hobart kept up the pressure and kept the ball in the Brewers' end. In the 64th minute, first-year midfielder Juan Vargas (Del Valle/El Paso, Texas) dropped the ball back to senior back Peter Cooke (Jamesville-DeWitt/Fayetteville, N.Y.) who drove a long curving shot past Vassar goalie Alex Parra (St. Francis Prep/Flushing, N.Y.) for a 2-0 lead. In the 86th minute, junior forward Matt Catterson (Clinton/Clinton, N.Y.) completed the scoring, finishing a pass from junior forward Adam Neary (Niskayuna/Niskayuna, N.Y.) to put Hobart up 3-0. In goal, junior Cory Rosier (Liverpool/Liverpool, N.Y.) made four saves for the shutout. Parra stopped nine shots for Vassar (0-3-0, 0-2-0). Griffin, in his second season as the Statesmen's head coach, was the head coach at Plymouth State for eight seasons. He has amassed a record of 100-57-13 as a college coach.
